Kazan, a city of over 1.3 million people in the oil-rich Tatarstan region, has been targeted previously by Ukrainian drones, though such deep strikes into Russian territory are uncommon.
According to Channels Television, Russian officials confirmed the drone strike, with Tatarstan’s leader, Rustam Minnikhanov, describing it as a significant attack.
The drone hit a 37-story residential building, causing explosions but sparing any lives.
Ukrainian drones have increasingly targeted both military and civilian infrastructure in Russia, a trend that has escalated since Kyiv gained permission from Washington to use missiles for military strikes in Russian territories close to the border.
While the strike did not damage an industrial facility, it did disrupt local life, with Kazan’s international airport temporarily closing for safety.
The strike occurred amid broader Russian military actions, including deadly strikes in Kyiv and the Kherson region of Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky affirmed that drone and missile strikes against Russian military targets would continue.
