No fewer than 1,304 recruits from Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa States have commenced training at the Police Training School, Odukpani, Cross River State.
The commandant of the school, ACP Gambo Erena, disclosed this during the visit of the Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 6, Jonathan Towuru, to the school yesterday.
Zone 6 Calabar comprises Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.
Towuru was received at the school by Commandant ACP Erena, who briefed him on the activities of the training, which commenced 15 weeks ago.
Erena stated that the trainees are being exposed to drills, liberal studies, legal studies, and modern policing techniques.
In his address, the AIG congratulated the recruits on their admission into the school for such a rigorous exercise.
He stated that the ongoing training of recruits across the country was part of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s, commitment to overhauling the Police Force for effective service delivery.
The AIG emphasized that the training aims to instill discipline at the grassroots level through regular supervision to achieve a mutually accountable force in line with international best practices.
He urged the recruits to take the training seriously to equip themselves with the extant mandates in accordance with constitutional provisions.
The AIG further reminded the trainees that society and crime are dynamic, stressing the need for officers to improve themselves to address current challenges such as crime, identity theft, and other vices.
The recruits were also advised to uphold the human rights of citizens as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the revised Police Act 2020.
The staff of the school were enjoined to conduct frequent health checks on the trainees to ensure their fitness for physical, mental, and academic activities.
In a statement, the Zone 6 PRO, Nelson Okpabi, mentioned that the AIG’s visit coincided with that of the Assistant Director of Administration, Police Trust Fund (PTF), Mr Rabiu Nahala, who was on an assessment mission to explore ways to improve the school’s facilities.
