Speaking in a recent interview, Salami revealed that he and thousands of other veterans have been waiting for their bonuses for decades. “We are asking for war bonus, those of us who fought the war. I retired in December 1983, and they promised us heaven and earth that they would give us our war bonus, but up till now, we have not seen it,” he said.
Salami highlighted the plight of over 24,000 members of the Nigerian Legion in Lagos alone, many of whom served during the Nigerian Civil War
Despite their sacrifices, they feel abandoned and unrecognized by the government, even 50 years after the war.
The retired colonel expressed concerns about the lack of support for veterans, stating that it has discouraged him from recommending military service to his children until these issues are resolved.
Salami’s appeal underscores the need for the government to honor its commitments to those who dedicated their lives to defending the nation.
