According to US District Judge Nina Wang, Jeanette Vizguerra, 53, a Mexican national who gained notoriety during President Donald Trump’s first term for evading deportation by relocating into a church, cannot be removed from Colorado without additional legal action. As a result, the judge has set a hearing on March 28. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, said on X that Vizguerra was taken into custody on Monday in Denver.

She has petitioned a US appeals court and a US district court to declare her detention order unconstitutional. Since taking office in January, the Trump administration has launched a broad immigration crackdown. During his campaign, he pledged to execute mass deportations and drastically cut down on illegal crossings at the US-Mexico border. Her detention has been questioned by a number of Colorado Democrats, who point out that she has never been charged with a violent crime and has multiple US-citizen children.
