On Monday, March 10, 2025, El-Rufai issued a statement in which he bemoaned the APC’s leadership and charged that the party had deviated from the progressive principles of its founders. Over the past two years, he disclosed, he had voiced worries about the party’s direction both publicly and personally, but he had not found the current leadership to be prepared to address the problems.
“The past two years’ developments demonstrate that the people in charge of the APC do not want to recognize or even address the party’s unhealthy state,” El-Rufai said. I’ve decided that, at this stage in my political career, I need to look for a different political platform in order to pursue the progressive ideals that I admire.
El-Rufai, who was instrumental in the APC’s founding in 2013, recalled his work mediating the political party merger that resulted in the establishment of the ruling party. He also emphasized his role in the APC’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, as well as his time as governor of Kaduna State, where he put policies in place centered on infrastructure, healthcare, education, investment, and job creation.
“I implemented progressive policies to advance human development during my eight-year tenure in Kaduna State,” he stated. In the current APC, which has disregarded its members and castrated its organs in the past two years, these records don’t really matter. This is unacceptable to me now.
El-Rufai filed his resignation from the APC to his Kaduna State ward, effective immediately. Additionally, he declared his intention to join the SDP, characterizing it as the foundation for his subsequent political activities.
