According to the DAILY POST, former Kano State Governor Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has criticized the opposition coalition, claiming it lacks the political framework necessary to take on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
Shekarau, who is the Chairman of the League of Northern Democrats (LND), said the coalition is not a strong alliance and described it as a gathering of individuals rather than a well-organized political merger.
In a statement on Friday, he said the coalition does not have the support of major opposition parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) and argued that without their backing, the coalition cannot be effective.
Shekarau compared the situation to the 2013 merger that led to the formation of the APC and explained that the APC came from four registered parties: the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
He said this merger was different because it involved established parties with elected officials and grassroots support.
He also pointed to recent events in the National Assembly and stated that the passage of the controversial State of Emergency law for Rivers State on March 20, 2025, showed that the opposition coalition has no real influence.
He noted that if the coalition had power, it could have stopped the law.
Shekarau reminded Nigerians of the failed opposition coalition in 2019.
He said that coalition also collapsed because it did not have full support from major opposition parties.
He rejected claims that the APC is weakening the opposition by attracting its members. Instead, he blamed opposition leaders for failing to build strong parties.
He said they should focus on unity, proper funding, and grassroots mobilization.
“What happened at the National Assembly on March 20, 2025, regarding the ‘State of Emergency’ in Rivers State has exposed the so-called coalition. it is clear they have no control over opposition lawmakers in the National Assembly,” he said.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
