Following a move presented by Katsina State member Dalhatu Tafoki, the resolution was approved on Tuesday. Unfettered access to pornographic content, according to Tafoki, has a detrimental effect on societal values, especially for young people. According to the lawmaker, a number of nations in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have passed legislation outlawing pornography. He also cited sociologists’ and psychologists’ cautions over pornography’s negative impacts, such as its propensity to encourage addiction, prostitution, and adultery.
“Renowned psychologists and sociologists worldwide have issued strong warnings about the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of consuming pornographic content,”he said. House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas led a voice vote in support of the action. Lawmakers who backed the measure underlined the need of upholding Nigerian moral and cultural traditions by restricting access to explicit material.
