Before we talk about any problems, it is important to recognize that Nigeria must remain a stable and cohesive nation, according to reports from Viable Television posted on YouTube on Monday, March 24. Discussions about cooperation and governance are pointless without this basis. Serving any one ethnic group, religious sect, or ideological movement is not my responsibility as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Working for Nigeria’s best interests, including its unity and the FCT’s development, is my duty. No group—religious or ethnic—will be able to influence or threaten me. Public service, especially in governance, comes with inevitable criticism. No leader can satisfy everyone, and stepping on toes is unavoidable. If one cannot handle public scrutiny, then politics is not the right path. Even religious leaders face criticism and misinformation, so it is no surprise that politicians are often subjected to rumors and propaganda. However, as long as one remains true to their principles and responsibilities, there is no reason to be unsettled by public opinion.
Recently, the National Mosque Management Committee, led by its chairman, brought forward concerns similar to those raised today. Former leaders have acknowledged that the National Mosque, like the Christian Ecumenical Centre, is a national asset. This recognition justifies the government’s allocation of funds for their maintenance. The annual grant of ₦50 million to the management of these religious centers further reinforces their significance as national institutions. However, I only became aware of contracts awarded for their maintenance after my appointment. Similarly, when I learned about land allocation issues affecting a religious group, I promptly directed the Executive Secretary of the FCT Development Authority to provide the necessary documents and approved a reallocation.
Unfortunately, misinformation is a significant challenge in our society. Following my intervention, rumors spread on social media that I had ordered the demolition of the National Mosque. This is the nature of the political environment we operate in, where certain individuals, unable to challenge us politically, resort to manipulating religious narratives to create division. Religious leaders must be cautious of such tactics and avoid being used as tools for political agendas.
I urge all Nigerians, especially religious leaders, to be discerning about the information they consume. It is not everything on social media that is true. If there are concerns about government policies or actions, seek clarification directly. Just as you reached out for this meeting, always feel free to ask questions instead of assuming the worst. Our nation faces enough challenges already, and it is the collective responsibility of both leaders and citizens to ensure stability.
Leadership, whether in politics or religion, carries immense responsibility. When religious leaders address their congregations, their words carry weight. Standing before hundreds or even thousands of people, they wield significant influence. It is essential to use that platform to preach unity, peace and national progress rather than fueling divisions with misinformation or sentiment-driven narratives.
In every election, only one person emerges as the winner, but that does not mean those who lost are any less important. Every candidate is a citizen of this country, and governance must continue regardless of political preferences. Rather than dwelling on personal disappointments, we must pray for the success of the government. If leadership fails, the entire nation suffers.
