Anambra is where Peter Obi hails from. We recall the undemocratic removal of the governor of Anambra, who was imprisoned in a toilet after taking an oath to his godfather at the Okija shrine. Peter, why should democracy die now if it didn’t die then? On May 29, 1962, Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa proclaimed a State of Emergency in the Western Region, suspended the Premier, and named Dr. Moses Majekodunmi the region’s administrator. President Olusegun Obasanjo proclaimed a State of Emergency in Plateau State on May 18, 2004, suspended the State House of Assembly, the governor, and his deputy, and named Major General (rtd) Chris Ali as the Administrator.
When he appointed Brigadier General Tunde Olurin as the Administrator in Ekiti on October 18, 2006, he did the same thing. “Incidentally, Peter Obi was the Governor of Anambra State at the time and did not voice any concerns or complaints. So, why has democracy suddenly died now that Rivers State has declared a State of Emergency and Governor Simi Fubara is suspended? The only difference is that now Peter Obi wants to be President. Since he cannot be President, given that he lost the 2023 elections and their so-called coalition is dead on arrival, that makes democracy in Nigeria dead in his eyes.
Interestingly, it was unlawful for Peter Obi to forgo holding local government elections in Anambra for seven years. Only in 2014 did he hold elections after taking office as governor in 2006. On the other hand, every four years, LGA elections are scheduled.
