I Had a Fight With My Father So I Changed My Surname and Picked Another One From The Bible – Branch

Popular Nollywood actor Femi Branch has revealed how he came about his now-popular stage name, explaining that it stemmed from a personal conflict with his father.Speaking in an interview on Oyinmomo TV, the actor shared that the fallout with his father led to his decision to drop the surname Osunkoya, which he had inherited from his father, and instead adopt the name “Branch,” inspired by the Bible.

Branch explained that the dispute with his father began after he refused to heed his father’s wishes to travel abroad. The tension grew to the point where the two stopped speaking for several years.During this period, Femi made the bold decision to change his surname as a way of severing ties with the strained relationship.

He chose “Branch” because of its spiritual significance—according to the Bible, Jesus is referred to as the “Branch of life,” and this powerful symbolism resonated deeply with him. As a result, he became widely known in the entertainment industry as Femi Branch, not Femi Osunkoya. He said: I didn’t speak with my dad for many years. He wanted me to travel abroad, but I refused and didn’t go. This led to our fight, so I changed my surname from Osunkoya to Branch. I got the name from the book of Jeremiah and Isaiah. But we later settled and reconciled. Then I adopted my name back.
