My Pastor Collected the Microphone From Me While Singing and Kicked Me Out of the Church – Limoblaze

Nigerian Afro-gospel artist Samuel Onwubiko, popularly known as Limoblaze, has opened up about a defining and painful moment in his early career, revealing that he was once kicked out of a church mid-performance by his own pastor. The incident, which occurred during his formative years as a gospel musician, highlights the challenges he faced in gaining acceptance for his Afrobeat-inspired style within traditional religious settings.

Limoblaze shared the experience during a recent interview with Pulse Nigeria, recalling how his musical approach was met with strong resistance from conservative elements in the church. At the time, Afrobeat was widely regarded as secular and unsuitable for worship. Many church leaders viewed its rhythms, sounds, and energetic presentation as incompatible with the solemnity typically associated with gospel music.

As a result, attempts to blend Afrobeat with gospel messages were often met with suspicion or outright rejection. During one particular performance, Limoblaze was actively ministering through his music when the pastor of the church abruptly interrupted him. In front of the entire congregation, the pastor took the  microphone from his hands and asked him to leave the church. The moment was both humiliating and heartbreaking for the young artist, who had been passionate about using music as a form of ministry.

He said: “Shout-out to all the new artists in the space coming out today. I envy you guys. There’s a lot more acceptance now. When I started, I was kicked out of church. I was singing one day, and my pastor snatched the microphone from me and kicked me out of the church. I cried so much that day. I faced so much kickback from the church for years. I had to change churches different times because the expression in me couldn’t be held down.”
