Kenya’s Nairobi — According to accounts, a Muslim couple in eastern Uganda were burned to death on December 26 together with their adult son who had accepted Christ in November. On November 22, 2024, Kaiga Muhammad, 64, his wife Sawuya Kaiga, and their 26-year-old son Swagga Amuza Kaiga made a decision to follow Christ when members of an unnamed church came to their home and preached the gospel to them in the Budini Nyanza neighborhood of Kaliro town, Kaliro District.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
After the three family members were saved by Christ, the church’s pastor, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons, said they asked for prayers for Swagga Amuza Kaiga, who was afflicted with malaria.
In an interview with Morning Star News, the pastor asserted, “We prayed for the son, and immediately he was restored to good health.” “Because Muhammad was a committee member in one of the mosques in the Budini Nyanza zone, the three members of the family who gave their lives to Christ chose to keep their faith a secret out of fear of the local Muslims.”
Muslims in the region reported to Wangule Abudu, the local chairwoman, that Muhammad had left the church’s worship service in a nearby village on December 15. According to the pastor, Muhammad freely told the chairperson who visited his home on December 16 that he and other family members had devoted their lives to Christ.
According to a relative who was not present when the parents and kid adopted Christ, the enraged Abudu offered Muhammad a week to reject Christianity, threatening to incite the Muslim community against the family if he didn’t.
The family member, whose identity is being withheld for security reasons, told Morning Star News, “Abudu said that our family had blasphemed the name of Allah and embarrassed the Muslim community.” According to a neighbor who arrived with others too late to save the family and the house, local Muslims lit the family’s home on fire with gas on December 26 and burned the three members of the family beyond recognition.
When Kaliro police came after the deaths, they conducted an investigation and took 20-year-old Ismail Njagi and 62-year-old Wangule Abudu into custody. According to authorities, the two Muslims were being held at the central police station in Kaliro on suspicion of murder and arson. For a postmortem, the deceased’s bodies were brought to Bumanya Health Center.
The attack was the most recent in a long line of recorded Christian persecution in Uganda. Religious freedom in Uganda is guaranteed by the Constitution and other legislation, including the freedom to convert to another religion and to spread one’s own.
