In a statement released on Sunday and signed by its Deputy President General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze made this claim and urged the president to exercise his executive authority to help Nnamdi Kanu be released in 2025.
Isiguzoro thinks that the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu will be a crucial step toward reestablishing peace and addressing the present insecurity issues afflicting the Southeast, rather than just an act of kindness. Noting that peace cannot be attained in the midst of bloodshed and strife, Isiguzoro insisted that the South East deserves a route toward stability.
Under the leadership of Senator David Umahi, the Igbo Apex socio-cultural organization also supports the acceleration of ongoing federal road rehabilitation and reconstruction projects throughout Southeastern Nigeria. They maintain that Southeastern infrastructure is the foundation of both social cohesion and economic advancement, and that it is therefore imperative that these projects be finished by the end of 2026.
“The Apex Igbo Sociocultural Organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, firmly frames this critical discourse around the sanctity of Nigeria’s unwritten gentleman’s agreement concerning the rotational presidency between the North and South,” the statement adds. To advance justice and fairness in our diverse fabric, this covenant—which is a cornerstone of our democracy—must be recognized and unwaveringly kept.
“We adamantly declare that it is now time for the Southern area to establish its rightful role at the helm of leadership from 2023 to 2031, following the conclusion of an eight-year Northern administration under former President Muhammadu Buhari, from 2015 to 2023. We must back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s campaign for a second term in the upcoming 2027 elections because of this justice concept.
Our analysis of the current political environment reveals a dangerous environment for governance due to the obvious weakness, chaos, and lack of unity among opposing political leaders. Even if people like Sim Fubara, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Nasir El-Rufai, and Peter Obi may have good intentions, it is doubtful at best that they will be able to pose a significant threat to the APC. Political scheming in support of leaders who provide no real blueprint for change would be a risky venture.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo warns that we must firmly oppose any attempt to use our organization as a platform for ill-advised political schemes. The goals of the Ibo people should not be subsumed by the political ambitions of a select few. We cannot afford to take another chance on shady relationships that have weakened our unity in the past. Our people are still suffering as a result of the disastrous 2019 endorsement of Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, which had a devastating effect on our communities and the foundation of our regional integrity.
“We shift our focus to positive action at this pivotal moment. We implore President Tinubu to use his executive authority to help Nnamdi Kanu be released by 2025. This crucial action will not only be a gesture of goodwill but also a crucial impetus for bringing peace and addressing the present insecurity issues afflicting the Southeast. Stability is what our region needs, and it cannot be achieved in the midst of conflict and violence.
Additionally, under Senator Dave Umahi’s leadership, we fervently support the expeditious completion of ongoing federal road maintenance and reconstruction projects in Southeastern Nigeria. Since our infrastructure is essential to both social cohesion and economic advancement, it is imperative that these projects be finished by the end of 2026.
“The next 2025 Census must also address the fundamental requirement for accurate representation, especially the inclusion of ethnic and religious demographics that accurately reflect the Igbo community throughout Nigeria, particularly in the northern region. We think that having such representation will strengthen our position in national discourse.
Furthermore, the establishment of two new Igbo states—Aaba State in the Southeast and Anioma State in the South-South—will improve our sociopolitical relevance, representation, and governance.
We further stress how urgent it is to revitalize the Eastern Economic Corridors, which call for calculated investing. Important projects include the construction of the Akwete Blue River Deep Seaport in Ukwa East, Abia State; the dredging and reopening of Calabar Seaport; and the revitalization of Enugu Coal Mine. Our region’s economic potential would also be strengthened by improving connection within our towns, such as Onitsha, Owerri, Okigwe, Abakaliki, and Awka, and rebuilding the railway infrastructure from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri.
“Our dedication to a path of peace, stability, and infrastructure development for the Southeast is shown in Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s resounding support of President Tinubu for a second term in 2027. We urge all Igbo people, including our members, to support this goal and put aside their local interests in favor of a unified front that advocates for real improvement in our area.
“We have a clear goal: to bring the Igbo people together through improved infrastructure and a steadfast dedication to safety and well-being in order to achieve unity, resilience, and a better future.
