In a statement released on Sunday, the ECOWAS Commission expressed its sympathies to the families of soldiers killed while performing their duties, as well as to the government, security forces, and citizens of Benin. ECOWAS also sent its best wishes for a quick recovery to the people hurt in the event.
The horrific attacks in the Point Trible neighborhood on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, by unidentified armed persons, which left many dead, are categorically condemned by the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS Commission).
“The ECOWAS Commission wishes a speedy recovery to the injured and extends its deepest condolences to the government, security forces, and people of the Republic of Benin, as well as to the families of the brave soldiers who lost their lives defending their country,” the statement said.
The significance of the current Counterterrorism Plan of Action was emphasized as ECOWAS reiterated its commitment to fighting terrorism in the region.
In order to combat the growing threat of terrorism, the organization called on member states to increase their collaboration, especially in the areas of border security and intelligence sharing. The regional organization reaffirmed its resolve to assist member states in guaranteeing the safety and security of citizens throughout West Africa and showed sympathy with the Benin government and people.
