AIG Farida Waziri: In 1965/1966, Farida Waziri, a well-known figure in Nigerian law enforcement, joined the Nigeria Police Force. She became the Commissioner of Police for the Special Fraud Unit and eventually became the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG). During her term, she secured Nigeria’s first-ever conviction for advance fee fraud. Waziri’s legacy in law enforcement was further cemented when she was appointed Chair of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
AIG Aisha Abubakar Baju: Also from Taraba State, also known as Sarauniyar Mambila, AIG Aisha Abubakar Baju is another prominent female police officer from the north. She was born in Adamawa State in 1971 and received her degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVN) from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria in 1994. In 1995, she became an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in the Nigerian Police Force, and in 2016, she was elevated to the position of Commissioner of Police. In 2007, Baju obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Plymouth. After serving as Commissioner of Police and Head of the Nigeria Police Force Animal Branch, Abuja, she was promoted to Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in 2020.
AIG Olofun Rhoda Adetutu: AIG Another senior female police officer from the north is Rhoda Adetutu Olofun, who is from Okene in Kogi State. She became a Commissioner of Police before being promoted to Assistant Inspector General of Police, just as Waziri and Baju. At the moment, she serves as the Force Secretary.
Results: Prior to Hauwa Ibrahim’s recent promotion, all of the officers listed above have been promoted to Commissioner of Police. Notably, according to The Abusites, a blog devoted to Ahmadu Bello University graduates and affiliates, DIG Aisha Abubakar Baju was specifically acknowledged as the first female Commissioner of Police from Northern Nigeria.
In summary: It is untrue to say that Northern Nigeria’s first female commissioner of police is CP Hauwa Ibrahim Jibrin. According to investigations, she was preceded by female Northern Nigerian Commissioners of Police, such as AIG Rhoda Adetutu Olofun, AIG Aisha Baju, and AIG Farida Waziri. CP Hauwa Ibrahim, however, may be Kano State’s first female commissioner of police.
