In an interview via MIC On Podcast, PDP chieftain Segun Sowunmi made a bold assertion about his political credentials and capacity to compete with leading figures, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. When asked whether he could be on the same presidential ballot as Tinubu, Sowunmi acknowledged the President’s intellect, contrasting it with others who are often critical of his administration but, in Sowunmi’s view, offer little substance in return.

 

Sowunmi argued that while policies under Tinubu’s leadership might be facing implementation challenges and may not yet be favorably impacting the poor, the vision behind many of the initiatives should not be dismissed. He particularly pointed to the Lagos coastal road project and the economic zones for agriculture as evidence of long-term strategic thinking. He accused critics of lacking depth and not appreciating the infrastructural and developmental implications of such projects.

Despite his respectful tone towards Tinubu, Sowunmi did not hold back from affirming his own superiority in terms of intellectual engagement. He emphasized his long-standing involvement in serious political discourse, positioning himself as more capable than others in the field—and even asserting that he has been engaging intellectually with Tinubu for years.

“The thing is that those who are up against him are not by miles better than me. In fact, I actually think he’s superior to them in intellect. And for me to tell you that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is superior to them in intellect, you must know that I know them. It would be tough for me to believe they have better ideas to offer, but I know I’m better than him because we didn’t start engaging intellectually today. Myself and Bola Ahmed Tinubu have been engaging deeply intellectually.”
