According to him, similar challenges exist globally, including in the United States (U.S.) and the United Kingdom (UK).
“Every society, even in America, they have food banks, they have hungry people. In Britain, they have food banks, they have warehouses. But they are organised; they always be in line and take turns to collect free food,” he said.
His remarks come amid rising concerns over a series of stampedes that have led to tragic deaths across Nigeria during food and palliative distributions. In Ibadan, Oyo State, 40 children lost their lives during a stampede at a children’s fair.
In Abuja, 10 people died during a chaotic rice distribution event at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Similarly, in Anambra State, 22 residents were reported dead in another stampede over rice palliatives.
Critics, including the African Action Congress (AAC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have blamed these tragedies on Nigeria’s dire socioeconomic conditions. However, Tinubu dismissed such claims, pointing to poor event planning instead.
“It is good to give. I have been giving out foodstuff and envelopes in Bourdillon for the last 25 years. I have never experienced this kind of incident because we are organized and disciplined.
