According to The Nation, Grammy-nominated Nigerian artist Davido has taken a firm stance against the negative narratives often associated with his country, defending Nigeria in a recent international media appearance. Speaking during an interview on a French-speaking television platform, the singer addressed the persistent portrayal of Nigeria as a place consumed by crime and insecurity. He stressed that such issues are not peculiar to Nigeria but are global challenges faced by many countries around the world.

Using examples from both Africa and Europe, Davido sought to correct misconceptions and provide a more balanced understanding of Nigeria’s reality. His comments reflected not only a desire to defend his country but also an appeal for fairness in the way international audiences view African nations.

Davido did not shy away from acknowledging that Nigeria, like many other nations, has its own challenges. However, he emphasised that these problems should not define the country or overshadow its progress and potential. The singer pointed out that many parts of the world, including major cities in Europe and other African nations, also deal with security concerns.

By drawing comparisons between Nigeria and other countries facing similar issues, he attempted to shift the narrative from one that singles out Nigeria to one that recognises crime and insecurity as a universal problem. His message was aimed at challenging the widespread tendency to use isolated incidents in Nigeria as a basis for broader negative assumptions.

In his efforts to reshape how people perceive Nigeria, Davido turned the spotlight on Lagos, the country’s largest city and economic powerhouse. He encouraged people to visit Lagos and experience the vibrancy of the city for themselves, rather than relying solely on media reports or stereotypes.

Lagos, he noted, is a city filled with business opportunities, cultural diversity, and an active entertainment scene. By inviting foreigners to explore the city firsthand, Davido promoted the idea that Nigeria has much more to offer than the problems commonly highlighted in news stories. He described Lagos as a dynamic and energetic place, capable of changing the minds of those who visit with an open perspective.

Davido also expressed concern about how the media often chooses to highlight negative stories coming out of Nigeria while ignoring positive developments and achievements. According to him, such coverage contributes to an imbalanced image of the country on the global stage. He called attention to the wealth, creativity, and talent that exist in Nigeria, noting that these elements are rarely given the attention they deserve.

His statements pointed to a larger issue of how African countries are portrayed in international media, with emphasis frequently placed on conflict, poverty, and instability. In contrast, stories of growth, innovation, and cultural influence are often overlooked, even when they are equally significant.
