George: How can governors from an organized party defect to disorganized APC with just two members?

 

According to The Sun News, former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has expressed deep surprise over the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Describing the development as “shell-shocking,” George criticized both Oborevwori and his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa—who were elected under the PDP—for abandoning what he called a well-structured party to join what he described as a disorganized one. His reaction followed a Daily Sun exclusive published on Monday, which disclosed an alleged covert agreement between President Bola Tinubu and some PDP governors, many of whom have reportedly pledged support for his second-term bid.

Reacting to this, George insisted that Oborevwori should relinquish his governorship, having secured the office through the PDP platform. “I am shell-shocked. How can our governors from an organised party defect to an unorganised party like APC with only two people, Tinubu and Ganduje , dictatorially controlling the party.” The APC is a coalition of strange allies. I urge the people of Delta not to follow Oborevwori into the APC. Delta has been a PDP stronghold since 1999, and that must not change,” George declared. He alleged that the presidency and the APC are exploiting state power to pressure PDP governors into switching allegiance, noting that such moves are done under threats.

“The PDP was the party that sponsored Oborevwori’s candidacy. He should therefore vacate the seat. Any attempt to convert Nigeria into a one-party system will not succeed. What exactly has the APC achieved since 2015 to make any PDP governor consider joining them?” he questioned. George had also previously advised FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to exit the PDP without delay. In a statement released on Wednesday, he voiced disapproval over their continued ties with figures in rival political camps while still claiming to belong to the PDP.

“What’s really happening here?” George asked. “If you’re done with the PDP, then leave and join another party. This ongoing public embarrassment must stop. As a founding member of the party, I won’t sit back and watch it be disrespected.” He also took a swipe at Atiku over his recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari in Kaduna, saying, “General Buhari is someone I respect as a former leader, but he’s not part of our party. Why then is Atiku engaging with him politically? That’s clearly an act of disloyalty to the party.”

He further referenced Tinubu’s remark to Wike about the APC winning the FCT council election—with Wike reportedly affirming the goal—as yet another indication of anti-party behavior.
