Onaiyekan added in a harsh statement that poverty is not God’s purpose and that using it as a weapon is “not only criminal but blasphemous.”He underlined that every Nigerian has enough thanks to God, and that mismanagement and greed are the root causes of all forms of poverty in the nation. “You are undermining God’s plan for humanity,” he said, adding that poverty is a governance failure rather than a problem that requires prayer and fasting. Onaiyekan questioned Nigeria’s democracy’s integrity, claiming that the ruling class does not actually want the people to elect their own leaders.
