The Daily Post claims that the arrest of six individuals three weeks ago by security personnel on suspicion of illegally possessing weapons and the finding of a suspected human skull served as the impetus for the nonviolent but emotive protest.
The ladies, dressed in wrappers, with banners in hand and toddlers strapped to their backs, claimed that the arrests had completely upended their lives. Some of the posters said things like “We Want Justice” and “Free Our Husbands.” The women contended that the arrests lacked transparency and were made arbitrarily. Speaking on behalf of the women protesting, Mrs. Abieyuwa Otasowie stated that the supposedly recovered arms were discovered in an open field that young people frequently use for sports. “Our community is not the only one in that industry. “Young people from nearby regions come there to play football,” she said.
The women also pleaded with the Oba of Benin, whom they referred to as a father figure, to step in and secure their loved ones’ release. Additionally, they urged Governor Monday Okpebholo to assist in ensuring that justice is served. “We are not here to engage in combat. We came to plead. Our men are not guilty. Our kids haven’t been attending school since they were taken away. Otasowie’s anguished plea, “We just want them back,” encapsulated the protest’s desperation and optimism.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
