Kanu tells court: “I did nothing wrong asking for freedom

 

According to Guardian Newspaper, The trial of Nnamdi Kanu has started at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Kanu is the leader of the group called the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The Nigerian Government has charged him with terrorism. During the trial, the first government witness spoke in secret. The court agreed the witnesses can hide their names and faces to stay safe. The judge, Justice James Omotosho, allowed this after the government asked for it. The government lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo, said it was needed for safety reasons.

Kanu’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi, did not say no. The judge said Kanu must still be able to see the people who speak against him. The first witness is from the Department of State Services (DSS). The witness told the court how Kanu was arrested in a hotel in Lagos in 2015. They said Kanu used a different name to book his hotel room. The DSS found many items in his room, like laptops, phones, iPads, microphones, flash drives, perfumes and ATM cards.

These items were brought to court and shown in public. The DSS also played a video of Kanu talking after his arrest. In his statement, Kanu said, “I am fighting for the freedom of my people.” He also said, “The call for decision making is the Fundamental right and not a crime.” Kanu added, “Freedom fighting is not a crime in any part of the world, including Nigeria, because it is a fundamental right.” He said he gave this statement without his lawyer, which is not allowed by law.

The trial is still going on.
