NEWS FLASH: APC Chieftain: We Are the Ones Who Put Him in Power, and We Are Going to Get Him Out of That Power

 

A fresh surge of defections recently rocked Nigeria’s political scene, with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) losing key figures to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). It all began when Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, switched allegiance after a meeting with PDP leaders and stakeholders in Asaba. Pioneer chairman Senator James Manager explained that the decision was reached after wide consultations. Following closely, former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, alongside political appointees and party executives, also crossed over to APC.

Speaking on the trend, lawyer and public affairs analyst Jesutega Onokpasa shared strong views during a live interview on Arise TV. While many expected him to celebrate the defections, Onokpasa clarified that he was far from jubilant. “It’s not a question of people defecting to our party; it’s a question of us ruling well,” he said, stressing that governance, not defections, should be the priority.

Onokpasa, who revealed that Governor Oborevwori is his cousin, said he was not informed about the defection. He stated, “I wish him well, but I don’t think it has value to him, to us, or to Delta State.” He emphasized that democracy thrives on opposition and that the idea of creating a one-party state was neither realistic nor desirable.

The analyst didn’t hold back on criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He maintained that the government’s focus should be on tackling hunger and economic hardship, not expanding party membership. Onokpasa warned, “If we are not careful, Tinubu will end up as a one-term president. Quote me anywhere.”

Despite his harsh words, Onokpasa made it clear he had no plans to leave APC. “I’m a foundational member of APC, and I’m not leaving it for anybody, including President Tinubu,” he declared. He also dismissed claims that his criticisms stemmed from personal grievances, saying, “It’s not Bola Tinubu that pays my bills or my children’s school fees.”

According to Onokpasa, dissatisfaction within the APC is aimed at preventing Tinubu from securing a second term, not destroying the party itself. “We are the ones who put him in power, and we are going to get him out of that power,” he stated confidently.

For Onokpasa, the 2027 elections will be determined not by mass defections but by the government’s ability to address the needs of ordinary Nigerians.
