According to report by Tribune News, the announcement followed a meeting held by the NPCG in Abuja, where key resolutions were made and communicated by the group’s Chairman, Babachir Lawal. The NPCG expressed serious concern about worsening insecurity across Northern Nigeria, which has exacerbated poverty, unemployment, loss of lives, destruction of property, and deteriorating education standards, particularly at the primary and secondary levels. Founded to unify Northern political figures and strengthen cooperation within the region, the NPCG stressed the need for a united front in selecting political candidates and platforms. They emphasized that decisions should be driven by knowledge rather than fear or emotions to ensure that the North fully benefits from its role in national politics. Moreover, the NPCG agreed on the importance of expanding their activities to all 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory through an operational framework. They stressed that the region should prioritize industrialization and productivity to overcome the current economic challenges. The NPCG also highlighted that fostering unity requires addressing issues of fairness, equity, and justice within and between Northern states. Prominent figures present or represented at the meeting included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Interior Minister Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. However, within the Labour Party, divisions persist regarding Peter Obi’s involvement in the coalition. Julius Abure, factional National Chairman of the LP, declared that Obi lacks the authority to negotiate coalition agreements or nominate candidates to oppose Tinubu on the party’s behalf. He insisted that the party has decided not to enter any coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 elections and condemned Obi’s participation as unacceptable and disrespectful to party leadership. In contrast, the National Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, supports Obi’s participation in the coalition.
