According to the Nigerian Tribune, a group of scholars and legal professionals known as Justice4AfeBabalolaLegacy (JABL) have shown their strong support for Afe Babalola amid a defamation case involving human rights activist Dele Farotimi. “No one in this nation has produced more SANs and solicitors than Afe. We want everyone to know that we think this man is great. “If we have the means, we can travel across the nation and inform them that Afe is not who this man claimed to be,” the organisation added. Under the leadership of Professors Adeyemi Ademowo, Ademola Azeez, and Ayodeji Emmanuel, JABL urged respect for Babalola’s legacy and denounced what they called unfounded accusations against the nonagenarian.
A contentious book that purportedly disparaged Babalola is the source of the case. JABL applauded the court’s decision to prohibit the book’s sale but questioned the book’s legitimacy. They claimed, “The book is not fact-based, so no one worth his salt will cite it.” Babalola has the legal right to file criminal libel charges, according to JABL, which addressed the public debate over whether defamation should continue to be a civil or criminal matter. “Libel is both civil and criminal in some states in this country… Chief Afe has the right to seek remedies within the law,” they continued.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
