“This Kind Of Smartness Will Not Help You, I’m Warning You Now That It Will Backfire” - Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has sounded a stark warning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that internal divisions, leadership failure, and selfish agendas may destroy the party’s chances of winning the 2027 general elections. Speaking during his monthly media chat on Monday in Abuja, the former Rivers State governor and key PDP figure criticized what he called the party’s “self-inflicted wounds” and lack of strategic leadership. “Leadership is key,” Wike said. “If you don’t show the right leadership, you will suffer for it.”

He expressed concern over growing hypocrisy and selective criticism within the party, particularly over alignments with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Wike defended Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, who have been criticized for their perceived support of President Bola Tinubu.

“What wrong did they do? That they said they were going to support Tinubu? That was the crime?” Wike asked, adding that the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman openly backed Labour Party’s Governor Alex Otti for a second term without facing backlash. “Why are people not talking about that? The BoT chairman, who is supposed to be the conscience of the party, adopted a governor from another party,” he stated.

Wike accused the PDP of tolerating impunity, failing to function as a true opposition party, and wasting time targeting him instead of focusing on political strategy and unity. “No opposition party allows impunity—it’s only in the PDP,” he said. “They are after Wike, but I made sure PDP won 100 percent in my state in 2023.” He warned that excluding capable leaders for political reasons would further weaken the PDP ahead of the 2027 race. “You haven’t won an election, but you are already excluding people. This kind of smartness will not help you. I’m warning you now—it will backfire.”

Wike concluded with a grim prediction that the same missteps that led to PDP’s 2023 presidential loss are being repeated. “If PDP doesn’t take care, selfish interests will kill it. I’ve said my own.”
