The state police command announced the arrest on its Facebook page Wednesday afternoon, stating that the 35-year-old ex-offender, John Agbontaen, was taken into custody by officers from the command’s Saint Saviour Divisional Headquarters while his accomplice managed to get away.
It was gathered that the operatives received a distress call that armed robbers were operating at the Restoration Gospel Ministry in Benin City, the state capital.
The operatives were said to have raced to the church premises where the man was arrested with a cut-to-size gun while attempting to cart away the thanksgiving offering in the church.
The command wrote: “Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed being an ex-convict that regained his freedom from Oko Prison, Benin-City, two days after he was arrested.
“He stated that he and his accomplice, one Ola whose surname is unknown, now at large, conspired to rob the church of the offering collected during its end of year harvest thanksgiving and he was arrested in the process, while his accomplice narrowly escaped.”
He was said to have given more useful information to the police operatives and he is expected to be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation.
