We Were Caught Completely Unaware; They Began Slaughtering The Cattle After The Gunshots -Ibrahim

Gunmen have killed more than 100 cattle and one herder in a series of brutal attacks across Jos South and Riyom local government areas of Plateau State, intensifying fears about the region’s ongoing violence.

Shagari Ibrahim, a herder who survived the assault, described the terrifying experience to Daily Trust TV. “We were caught completely unaware; they began slaughtering the cattle after the gunshots ran out,” Ibrahim recounted. “It was chaos everywhere. We have called the security officials to assess the situation. What did we do to deserve this?”

The State Secretary of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has confirmed the incidents and pointed to members of the Berom ethnic group from affected communities as perpetrators. However, the Berom Youth Movement leadership strongly rejected these accusations, dismissing them as unfounded propaganda.

In response to rising tensions, MACBAN leadership has urged its members to maintain calm and avoid vigilante justice, expressing confidence that security agencies will investigate and prosecute those responsible.

Joyce Rambo, Plateau State Commissioner for Information and Communication, told reporters she had not been briefed on the incidents and had attempted to verify the reports by contacting the Riyom Local Government chairman, who was unreachable at the time.

Despite this lack of confirmation, Rambo emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance stance toward violence. “Regardless of the situation, the government will never condone any form of criminal activity in the state,” she stated. “Anything that threatens our peace will not be taken lightly. This administration will not tolerate any act that disrupts the fragile peace we have on the Plateau.”
