The police chief was charged by Adeleke of conspiring with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to unlawfully take over local governments in Osun. “It is regrettable and a disservice to democracy that the Inspector General of Police is colluding with the APC to enforce a non-existent court order,” the governor stated in a statement to the British diplomats, who were led by Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter. This poses a severe risk to Nigerian democracy.
Osun, a peaceful state, is under attack from security personnel that, instead of upholding the rule of law, are actively assisting and abetting democratic process abuses, according to Adeleke, who on Saturday reiterated his preparedness for peace, free, and fair elections. “You are in my state at a pivotal point in our political life,” he said. Those who ought to defend democracy are posing an existential threat to our democratic existence. We have done everything we can to ensure that the ongoing local government issue remains peaceful. However, the police-backed opposition managed to infiltrate the secretariats of the local governments. They were openly assisted by security personnel in enforcing the law. We urge the diplomatic world to pay careful attention to Osun State’s ongoing democratic rape. We specifically draw attention to the security agents’ detrimental contribution to the problem. In a democracy, all parties must follow the law. The governor informed the visiting diplomats that self-help was not an option. Osun has achieved significant progress in a number of areas, he said the diplomats.
“We have addressed worker welfare, enrolled pensioners in the state health insurance program, and reduced the infrastructure deficit by 40 percent,” Adeleke continued. The Governor also informed the delegation that Osun has unified taxes, liberalized the business-friendly climate, and provided a 45-day window for issuing certificates of occupancy.
During the visit, British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter emphasized the value of democratic processes and the rule of law.
