In order to promote peace and stability, this is done in an effort to provide the bandits who are surrendering a chance to give up their weapons and free all of the abducted people. The call was made by Maj.-Gen. Ebikunle Ademola-Ajose, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Sokoto, during his Wednesday visit to Governor Dikko Radda in Katsina.
In addition to his operational assessment tour to the states he oversees, he stated that the Chief of Defense Staff instructed him to speak with the state administration about the latest developments. “This is because some bandits are saying that they want to negotiate,” Ademola-Ajose stated.To be honest, we are not involved in the negotiation of this agreement.
“However, a program like this is something you look upon when you are trying to solve this wicked and perennial problem.”I was instructed by the CDS to notify you that Operation Save Corridor North-West has been launched by the Federal Government. It resembles the one that was started in the northeast.
The GOC further mentioned that the CDS has sent letters to the four states outlining their potential collaboration on the scheme. Ademola-Ajose oversees the states of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Katsina as the Theater Commander for Operation Fansan Yamma. He claims that the program will allow the bandits who are in the process of surrendering to hand up their weapons, free all the captives, and return to civilization.
In response, Radda stated that the Batsari Local Government Area’s government held a security meeting and talked about matters pertaining to the peace agreement.
“A committee was established to work on the two tasks that were highlighted in the meeting.”Because we need the community’s support before we can be accepted in this transaction, there should be stakeholder engagement. “There also must be laid out conditions to be forwarded to them for their acceptability or otherwise,” he stated. Radda claims that without community participation, it would not succeed, stating that “this is because it had happened before.”I have stated on multiple occasions that I might not engage in negotiations with the bandits. I’m not going to grovel before them to come and bargain with me.
However, the state government is prepared to listen to them and offer all the assistance they require for their life and the welfare of their animals if they surrender and declare their want to engage in negotiations. “We are prepared to do it, but we must consider all the difficulties as well as the advantages and disadvantages.”Although they decided to be criminals, they are our people and were born here, along with their parents and grandparents. He said, “We will be willing to accept them if they choose to be good people.”
In the meantime, Nigerian troops killed Bello Turji’s second-in-command, Aminu Kanawa, and several senior members of his group during a military operation in the Northwest, according to the Defense Headquarters, dealing a serious blow to the infamous terrorist.
During January 20–21, 2025, soldiers from Operation FANSAN YAMMA successfully attacked Turji’s camp in Sokoto and Zamfara States. The organization’s leadership structure is severely weakened by the passing of Kanawa, a pivotal player. Furthermore, several of Turji’s closest associates, such as his younger brother Dosso and one of his confidants, Danbokolo, suffered deadly injuries at the hands of military forces.
“The terrorist network in the Northwest has suffered a serious setback with the elimination of Aminu Kanawa and other key members of the group,” stated Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defense Media Operations. “These operations have seriously weakened their ability to launch additional attacks by upsetting their command structure and combat capabilities.”
Other important commanders such as Abu Dan Shehu, Jabbi Dogo, Dan Kane, Basiru Yellow, Kabiru Gebe, Bello Buba, and Dan Inna Kahon-Saniya-Yafi-Bahaushe were also killed by the troops. In the vicinity of the towns of Gebe and Isa in Sokoto State and Gidan Rijiya in Shinkafi LGA of Zamfara State, about 24 terrorists who were escaping from Turji’s camp were also eliminated.
Suleiman, a supporter of the late terrorist commander Halilu Sububu, was also slain during the battle close to the Fakai high ground while trying to bolster Turji’s haphazard camp. The gang, which has been involved in multiple kidnappings and attacks throughout Zamfara and Sokoto States, especially in the Zurmi, Shinkafi, Isa, and Sabon Birni districts, has been significantly weakened by the deaths of these leaders and the destruction of Turji’s camp.
