A petition to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents the Kogi Central Senatorial District, has been acknowledged by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The commission emphasized a crucial problem in a statement released by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Sam Olumekun: the petition does not include the petitioners’ full contact information. All representatives’ complete addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses must be included in the petition in accordance with INEC requirements. Rather, the petition merely gives the primary petitioner’s single phone number and the broad address, “Okene, Kogi State.”
According to reports, more over half of the 474,554 registered voters in the senatorial district signed the petition, which was delivered with six bags of paperwork. 902 voting places spread over 57 registration areas in the local government areas of Adavi, Ajaokuta, Ogori/Magongo, Okehi, and Okene provided these signatures. INEC underlined that voters who have lost faith in their elected official have the constitutional right to a recall procedure. The commission will use the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) to confirm the provided signatures if a petition satisfies all legal requirements.
Nonetheless, INEC said that it is working to alert the petitioners and guarantee adherence to the necessary regulations because of the missing contact information. The commission encouraged people to ignore rumors or false information spreading on social media and reminded the public that the recall process would adhere strictly to legal standards. On Monday, the petition was formally delivered to Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the secretary of INEC. The petition’s supporters assert that they have gathered over 200,000 registered voters, the necessary amount of signatures.
