People in the North have been told to stop placing blame on others for the current security and economic conditions in the area since they are the result of intentional harm done by the people themselves for their own selfish and personal benefit. Usman Yusuf, a former Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), made the claim.
“No Northerner should hold anyone accountable for our current state of affairs,” he said. It was something we caused. Where are we now? In 2015, we voted out the government under the guise of Boko Haram. The Abuja-Kaduna-Kano route is still unfinished despite Muhammadu Buhari being as president for eight years. “Today, billions of Naira have been set aside for the coastal highway between Lagos and Calabar,” he continued. For this, who are we responsible? Of course, ourselves. Our kids are unable to attend school, and farmers are unable to visit their land due to insecurity and banditry. Which individuals are Boko Haram and which are the bandits? Who are these individuals, and now we have another Lakurawa? Of course, our people.
“I hear discordant voices of betrayal throughout the Northern region. Who betrayed whom?” In the general elections of 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received almost 8 million votes, more than 5 million of which were from the North. Thus, the North decided to be deceived,” he continued. The same North voted for Muhammadu Buhari to be president in 2015. He served for eight years but was unable to finish a feasible project in the region. “Go and see what it has done for the other side of the country within one year,” he continued.
“All we can do is sit idle and cry that we have been betrayed,” Usman Yusuf said in an attempt to vent his rage. Since the departure of individuals like Gudaji Kazaure, some of the members of the NASS no longer speak for the North. The Northerners were responsible for all that happened in the North. “This country used to have good leadership, leaders who built good schools, roads, hospitals, and other infrastructure without caring who was where, without discrimination, and with the people and the country as their focus,” he said.
“I realized when I entered government that it was not the work that needed to be done but how the money needed to be shared,” he said. It had to be shared, but all of my attempts to explain that the money given to NHIA was for the benefit of the populace were met with silence. He asserted that “the Armed Forces cannot do that for us if we don’t work out our peace.” It is up to us to make ourselves peaceful. Since we have been living in harmony for a long time and our DNA is identical, why are we killing ourselves?
“The answer is not far-fetched,” he added, “because it was done only to sow discord between the Fulani and others in order to split and destroy the North.” Making sure that we no longer speak the same language, respect one another, and interact with one another was the greatest way to achieve that. He claims that some of our leaders are taking advantage of us for their own financial gain by exploiting Boko Haram, ISWAP, and now Lakurawa. They are actively selling the problem of instability in the North. With those few individuals there, this marketing will never stop.
He bemoaned the fact that Borno State, the birthplace of the whole situation, is now more tranquil than Katsina State, the home of the immediate former president Muhammadu Buhari, claiming, “We had a President for eight years; what did he do to stem the free flow of blood? We rely too much on religion and sleep too much. “They are busy building their regions while we are busy killing ourselves and destroying the Northern region,” he said. Their kids are going to school, while we are not. The young people need to take action right away since we have already tried and failed.
“If you don’t know, let me tell you that eight governors put us in the current situation in the North. They diligently pushed the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, which not only brought about the current administration but also exacerbated the conflict between Muslims and Christians, who were once brothers and sisters,” Usman Yusuf said.
“There is a great deal of animosity in the North because the native Christians claim that the Muslims caused them problems,” the medical professor continued. No sane Northerner, in my opinion, will take a Muslim-Muslim ticket. We are now considered a joke because they have been successful in separating Northerners from one another.
I recently saw someone on TikTok say, “Now that the Muslim-Muslim presidency has failed us, we will try the Christian-Christian presidency next time. You can see what we have been reduced to.”
“Let me tell you, the so-called Muslim-Muslim ticket was not in good faith at the time; it was done to ridicule Islam and Muslims,” the former NHIA ES said. Let us be mindful of God’s anger, please, my people. Islam is being used by us to defraud and mislead people. Islam is serious business. You have power now, young people.
“I am here essentially because I believe in the youths, because nations are built by the youths, not the elderly,” he emphasized. “We must all excite our youths and step aside and show them the way, because that is the only way this nation can be reformed, it is by the youths.”
The country has given my generation more than we can possibly repay, he said, adding, “We must develop the 15, 17, 19, and older young people. We are here to guide you.” Giving back to your kids and grandkids is your responsibility, but you can’t just sit around on Facebook or TikTok and hope for anything to happen to you.
The medical professor went on to say, “You young people need to take a stand and participate in whatever process you find yourself in wherever you are. Just do it.” You won’t get far by blaming others and complaining about the state of affairs.
“I feel good about this country, and there are many young people who care about it. We need to support you, and I am here to support you,” he said.
“Why was it possible that we attended school for free when we were young?” he continued. because we had both Muslim and Christian leaders who were decent and honest.
Just leaders at every level, from elementary and secondary schools in the communities to universities. My parents enrolled me in Catholic schools for all of my education.
“There was no religious discrimination in my time; we were the only ones, and my parents insisted that we go because we were one,” he said. My father actually emphasized that Catholic schools had superior discipline than NA schools.
I went to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria, which includes students from all around the nation both currently and in the past.
“It is you who will get the North out of the present doldrums and make things work again,” he emphasized, urging young people to rise up, fight without resorting to violence, and free the Northern area by making sure they voted out all those horrible politicians.
He claims that the current administration is bewildered, trying to solve the issue by trial and error, and is unsure of how to proceed. Therefore, the people of the North, especially the young people, need to unify.
