The Lagos State Police Command has exposed a new kidnapping tactic, dubbed “Constructive Kidnapping.” This scheme involves kidnappers posing as online friends and romantic partners to lure unsuspecting women into their trap. The kidnappers’ strategy is to establish a false sense of familiarity with their victims on social media. Once the victim’s trust is gained, the kidnappers invite them to Lagos, often under the pretense of a romantic meeting. To make their trap more convincing, the kidnappers send large sums of money, up to N500,000, to their victims and cover their travel expenses to Lagos.
Upon arrival in Lagos, the victims are taken to luxury hotels, where their phones are confiscated, and their money is transferred out. The kidnappers then contact the victims’ families, demanding ransom and threatening to harm the victims if their demands are not met.
Commissioner of Police Olawale Ishola described the tactic as “Constructive Kidnapping” because the victims are lured into the trap under false pretenses. He warned the public, especially women, to be cautious when interacting with strangers online and to report any suspicious activity.
In a related case, a 15-year-old girl was rescued after conspiring with her boyfriend to fake her own kidnapping and demand ransom from her parents.
