Two weeks following a failed attempt at reconciliation, fighting between Jama’tu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS), also known as Boko Haram, and its breakaway offshoot, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), has resumed in Borno State’s Abadam local government area.
In an X post, Makama claimed that ISWAP had sustained significant losses in the war conducted on the water. According to him, the violence can go on and reach Kukawa LGA, where Boko Haram militants are still fighting ISWAP. Since ISWAP broke away from Boko Haram and swore loyalty to the Islamic State in 2016, the two groups have been engaged in combat.
Abubakar Shekau, a previous eccentric head of JAS, became the leader of ISWAP in 2015 after swearing loyalty to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). However, some of the group’s top leaders, such as Habib Yusuf, the son of Boko Haram founder Mohammed Yusuf, had to split from Mr. Shekau due to ideological disagreements. CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
