Nigeria has made a major diplomatic error with Mallam Nuhu Ribadu’s recent undiplomatic tirade at Canada’s refusal to grant General Christopher Musa and half of his crew visas. It’s important to keep in mind that General Musa traveled to Canada in order to participate in an invitation-only ceremony commemorating war veterans. Additionally, General Musa said that event visas had been granted to half of his squad. The main query is: What caused the other half to be denied entry? Instead of using diplomacy to get clarification, Ribadu’s divisive remarks hurt Nigeria’s standing abroad.
Despite being inconvenient, visa refusals are widespread and not unique to Nigeria. Every nation, including Canada, has authority over its borders and determines who is allowed entry based on security, diplomacy, and immigration regulations. When needed, Nigeria also uses this right. It is disrespectful and demonstrates a lack of understanding of international diplomacy for a senior national security official to express such hatred.
Furthermore, Ribadu does not hold the position of Foreign Affairs Minister. He ought to have reached out to the Foreign Affairs Minister to look for diplomatic options, considering his position as National Security Advisor. Unilaterally assuming the positions of Foreign Affairs Minister and NSA compromises diplomatic protocol and presents the administration as inexperienced, unskilled, and incapable of conducting diplomacy—something he is incapable of doing. His reaction raises concerns about his suitability for the position and demonstrates bad strategic thinking.
It would have been more balanced and strategic to approach Canada gently, asking for an explanation for their decision and urging reconsideration. Diplomatic interactions demand tact, not immature outbursts. Ribadu’s actions give the impression that Nigeria is entitled to visas from all nations, which betrays an attitude of entitlement. This isn’t feasible. The host nation’s admission rules do not exempt high-ranking officials.
Furthermore, the response could harm Canada-Nigeria bilateral relations. Canada is one of Nigeria’s most important partners, particularly in the areas of commerce, development assistance, and education. Over the years, Canada has provided assistance in a number of areas, including security cooperation. It is foolish and irresponsible to cut diplomatic ties after a visa is denied. Nigeria must refrain from making snap decisions that could damage its reputation internationally.
Paradoxically, Ribadu’s tirade highlights a fundamental issue with Nigerian governance: giving privilege precedence over accountability. He used divisive words instead of considering the delegation’s refusal. Did Canada face problems because of security concerns, the delegation’s mission, or other unspecified factors? Instead of using crude remarks, a capable national security advisor would look at these issues.
This episode emphasizes the need for improved international diplomacy and should serve as a wake-up call for Nigerian leaders. Even in times of conflict, diplomatic language is helpful because it promotes fruitful dialogue and shows respect for all participating nations. Nigeria’s worldwide isolation will only increase as a result of its careless handling of foreign affairs.
Mallam Nuhu Ribadu should apologize to Nigeria for his careless remark. He speaks for a country of more than 200 million people, thus his responsibility goes beyond himself. His undiplomatic tirade lacked the maturity, restraint, and strategic thinking that are essential for leadership. To get respect from other countries, Nigeria must make sure its leaders behave properly.
