Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the premier Igbo sociocultural organization, has elected Senator John Azuta-Mbata, a native of Ikwere in Rivers State, as its president general. On Friday, January 10th, 2025, Senator Azuta-Mbata, who served as the representative for Rivers East in 1999, was elected to the Enugu Senate. In accordance with the body’s rotational strategy, Ohaneze assigned Rivers State its presidential seat. After Imo State Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu passed away in 2024, Senator Azuta-Mbata took over. Remember how the late Professor George Obiozor, also from Imo State, had previously passed away and the late Iwuanyanwu had taken over his position?
A court decision prohibiting him from running for president of Ohaneze forced the former Inspector General of Police to withdraw from the campaign Thursday night. His ancestry had been the subject of intense scrutiny and dispute. In his acceptance address, Senator Azuta-Mbata thanked everyone for their faith in him and promised to promote Igbo unity.
