“I petitioned the IG about a person who forged letterhead paper and is threatening me to resign,” Agunloye confirmed the petition to The Cable on Tuesday. Following months of strategic talks with opposition leaders, El-Rufai formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday and joined the SDP. El-Rufai, a strong opponent of President Bola Tinubu’s government, lost favor with the APC after the Senate rejected his nomination as a minister. Dismissing claims that the National Assembly rejected him, he asserted in February that Tinubu purposefully excluded him from the cabinet.
El-Rufai pledged in his resignation statement to bring opposition forces together against the APC, saying, “As a member of the SDP, I will focus on engaging with and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to join us and congregate under a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in all elections and bye-elections between now and 2027 by the Grace of God.” Calling the SDP a forum for national reform, he also urged his followers and Nigerians who wanted political change to join.
