An important demonstration of the state’s legislative power was made when the pro-Nyesom Wike Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, overrode Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s consent on three important laws. The Rivers State Commissions of Inquiry Bill, 2024; the Rivers Electricity Market Bill; and the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) (Amendment) Bill are the three bills under consideration. During the 94th Legislative Sitting on Thursday, Speaker Amaewhule revealed that the House overrode the Governor’s assent by using Section 100(5) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended Constitution.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
He clarified that if the governor does not provide his consent, the provision gives the House the authority to pass laws. The Speaker made it clear that the state’s advancement would not be hampered by Governor Fubara’s inability to sign the bills. He emphasized that “the State must move forward.” “We can’t let the Governor’s incompetence and laziness stop us.”
Governor Fubara was also chastised by Amaewhule for reportedly believing that he was above the Constitution, the judiciary, and other state laws. He did, however, promise that the House will continue to respect democracy and the Constitution. He continued by saying that the override had made the three measures law in Rivers State, which was a major win for the legislative branch of government.
