Due to alleged anti-party activities, Senator Kawu Sumaila, who represents the Kano South Senatorial District, and three other notable party members have been suspended by the Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa, the NNPP’s state chairman, made the announcement of the suspension at a news conference in Kano on Monday. He claimed that even if the impacted members were elected on the NNPP platform, their conduct ran counter to the goals and ideals of the party. Dungurawa claimed that despite being provided complimentary tickets to represent the party, they had not shown the loyalty that was expected of them.
The commissioning of projects at Senator Kawu Sumaila’s university in Sumaila and the wedding of his daughter were two significant events that led to their suspension. Among other opposition leaders, Sumaila had invited prominent APC members, such as APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau. The APC members’ dominance of the activities and the notable absence of important NNPP stakeholders shocked NNPP officials.
Rumors of Mass Defection Tension in Fuel Barely a day after APC National Chairman Ganduje alluded to the impending mass defection of prominent NNPP members to the ruling APC, the suspension was announced. According to Dungurawa, the NNPP’s cohesiveness and strength were further undermined by the suspended lawmakers’ apparent alignment with the APC. In order to resolve the matter, the NNPP established a committee to look into the MPs’ behavior and suggest additional measures.
