Recently, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), acting on behalf of the federal government, approved network operators’ petitions for pricing adjustments in response to the state of the market. Reuben Muoka, the NCC Director of Public Affairs, announced this in a statement.
Although it is less than the over 100% that some network operators have demanded, the adjustment, which is limited to no more than 50% of existing rates, was made with consideration for continuing industry reforms that will have a positive impact on sustainability. As is the Commission’s custom for tariff reviews, requests will be examined on an individual basis, and these adjustments will stay within the tariff bands outlined in the 2013 NCC Cost Study. Strict adherence to the recently released NCC Guidance on Tariff Simplification, 2024, shall govern its implementation.
The NLC is among the parties who have rejected the approval, arguing that it would put further strain on already overburdened Nigerians. The administration defeated the labor union’s plans to launch nationwide protests against the development during a two-party meeting, and the idea was shelved. The workers’ union has asked that the telecom pricing hike be rejected even though the NLC protest was temporarily put on hold.
