“I invested $200 myself and I now collected money from all my friends, and all the money we invested is $1000,” she said. According to her, the decision to invest came after encouragement from a neighbor who claimed to have made quick profits from CBEX.

Mrs. Bolarinwa, visibly emotional explained that she had endured immense hardship while in Libya. “I went to Libya to work and there was no work and we were hustling, fighting. Look at my hand,” she said, displaying injuries as a testament to her struggle. On returning to Nigeria, she hoped to rebuild her life with the small amount of money she had managed to save. “Small money I made from Libya, I joined it. I didn’t want to do it but I saw the money my neighbor made from it, so I invested,” she explained.

Her story highlights the growing desperation among Nigerians returning from difficult experiences abroad, only to fall prey to fraudulent investment schemes promising high returns. The collapse of CBEX has left many like Mrs. Bolarinwa in financial distress, with some owing money to friends and family who trusted them with their contributions.

Authorities are reportedly investigating the CBEX scheme but for victims like Mrs. Bolarinwa, the damage has already been done. The incident serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unverified financial schemes targeting vulnerable individuals.
