On Monday, the Edo State Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja confirmed Okpebholo’s election as the legitimate governor. The decision has elicited various responses from lawmakers. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared him the winner after he defeated Dr. Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and 15 other contenders.
Reacting to the verdict, PDP National Vice Chairman (South-South), Chief Dan Orbih, acknowledged the tribunal’s decision, stating that it stands as delivered.
Orbih attributed the party’s challenges to Governor Godwin Obaseki, suggesting that the PDP should focus on reconciling with members who left during the primary election process that led to Ighodalo’s emergence as the candidate.
He further criticized Obaseki, blaming him for divisions within the party and pointing out his absence at the tribunal when the verdict was announced.
He said: “I blame the party’s woes in the election on governor Godwin Obaseki, who chased everybody away from the party.
“Unfortunately, the man (Obaseki) who brought distress, division and disaster to PDP in Edo has since fled the country.”
He emphasized that PDP’s legal team would carefully examine the tribunal’s ruling before determining the next course of action.
Meanwhile, the Edo State PDP expressed disappointment in the tribunal’s decision.
