Speaking on the political tension in the state, Chilaka noted that the federal government is more focused on the wealth generated from the Niger Delta than the interests of the people. He stated, “Well, you see, right now, the president and the mood of the nation are more interested in the resources they get from the Niger Delta, especially from Rivers State. So, Mr. President would want to do everything to ensure that the goose that lays the golden egg keeps laying eggs. Even if it means sacrificing the current governor, maybe by impeachment or whatever, that’s what he’s going to do.”
He further stressed that if the situation escalates, the federal government could justify imposing a state of emergency in Rivers State. Chilaka argued that such actions would not be taken in the interest of the people but rather to maintain control over the region’s vital resources. “It’s not being done in the interest of the people, I must emphasize that,” he added.
