Governor Okpebholo contended that Jonathan’s remarks were hypocritical, arguing that the former president did not take decisive action during his tenure when confronted with critical situations, notably the 2014 abduction of the Chibok girls. He emphasized that proactive leadership is crucial and stated that Tinubu’s decision has been instrumental in salvaging Nigeria’s economy during times of crisis.
The governor reiterated the idea that the declaration of a state of emergency is a necessary step to ensure national security and economic stability in Nigeria. He described Tinubu’s emergency rule as a welcome development, particularly in fostering peace in the volatile Niger Delta region, which has been plagued by militancy and violence affecting the country’s crucial oil infrastructure.
Okpebholo also questioned the expectations placed on a president faced with threats to national security, especially in light of past incidents that have harmed the economy. He emphasized the critical link between security and economic well-being.
In his remarks, the Edo Governor contrasted fiscal performances between past and current administrations, noting that during Jonathan’s presidency, Nigeria’s total annual budget amounted to around ₦1.6 trillion. He underscored that this figure is now equivalent to the monthly allocation shared from the Federation Account, indicating that the current administration is progressing in enhancing Nigeria’s economic prospects.
According to report from The Nation, Okpebholo stated, “The man criticising President Tinubu did not take a similar step when he heard that they were going to kidnap the Chibok girls in 2014.
