In his statement, Nwaebonyi emphasized the importance of respecting the established structure of governance, where the legislature plays a crucial role in shaping national policies and providing oversight on the executive arm of government. According to him, a serving senator’s responsibilities extend beyond those of a minister, warranting appropriate recognition.
“A senator is a direct representative of the people, elected to make laws, debate national issues, and hold the executive accountable. In contrast, a minister is an appointee of the president, serving at the discretion of the executive. By this structure, the office of a senator is positioned at a higher level in the hierarchy of governance,” he stated.
The lawmaker further stressed that respect for public office should not be determined by personal opinions but by constitutional roles and responsibilities. He maintained that interactions between public figures should be guided by decorum and recognition of institutional authority.
While acknowledging Dr. Ezekwesili’s contributions as a former minister, Nwaebonyi insisted that public discourse should be conducted with mutual respect, especially when engaging with elected officials. He expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of undermining the legislative arm of government, urging Nigerians to uphold the dignity of democratic institutions.
