His argument, he claims, is based on the fact that Tinubu entered office without a manifesto and that Nigerians elected him in spite of their warnings. This was said by Apostle Suleiman in response to questions from reporters at the Government House on Wednesday, just after making a courtesy call to the governor of Bauchi State during his two-day campaign in the state.
He claimed that because Tinubu entered power without a plan, he cannot be held responsible for any pledges he made to Nigerians during the election.
Nigerians are partially deserving of what they are going through. In the sense that when someone takes over as leader and there isn’t a single manifesto, we screamed, yelled, spoke, and cried out before the election. The man just said, “It’s my turn.” Since there was no manifesto, there is nothing to criticize him for. He stated, “He never stated that he was coming to do this or that.”
We can see that someone came to power, and Nigeria is in their hands, and they truly don’t know what to do with it,” he continued. I don’t think Nigeria will be able to recover from the harm done to the oil industry over the next ten to fifteen years. People were relying on the tax, but it has already been messed with. Therefore, Nigerians only need to turn to prayer. They will make a wise decision if they have endured enough suffering by 2027.
He merely replied, “nothing,” when asked what advice he would give the president and his team. In particular, he claimed that Tinubu arrived in office unprepared, without a manifesto or blueprint, and that he is surrounded by “misfits.” He reaffirmed that he has no personal ill will against the President, whom he said he much admires, and that his sole objection was to policies that his (Tinubu’s) administration had put in place that would negatively affect the populace.
First and first, I would like to take this opportunity to state unequivocally that I have no personal animosity toward the President in front of Apostle Johnson Suleiman, a man of God. I’m among those who value the institution of leadership, particularly the president’s position. You are aware of my Senate history when I advocated for the Doctrine of Necessity. My employer, Goodluck Jonathan, became president in order to honor the position of vice president.
Conversely, I have a great deal of respect for President (Bola) Tinubu. However, someone needs to step up and tell him the truth—that he is surrounded by misfits—and I can now understand from the Man of God that Tinubu entered government unprepared, lacking a manifesto and an objective.
Because of his background and experience as a Lagos State Governor who was able to work his magic, we have a great deal of faith in him. Even though he was from a different party, I was ecstatic when he was elected president. I believed that the Uhuru had arrived, but I have witnessed freedom and progress eluding us. As a statesman, responsible citizen, and head of a sub-national, I must advise that you cannot suppress Nigerians’ aspirations by treating all Nigerians as customers in an attempt to realize your goal.
“We should treat Nigerians as citizens, not as consumers, and refrain from enacting laws that would drive a wedge between us. We ought to value our differences. Since Prophet Suleiman is a worldwide figure, a universal preacher, and a young person who has stepped up to the plate by visiting all the nooks and crannies, we should practice inclusivity rather than impunity, which makes people feel like they are being taken advantage of. He came to Bauchi despite hearing voices from Thomases who had doubts, he added.
“That is why I want the President to believe me, I mean well,” the governor continued. All I’m trying to say is that you can improve your government by making accommodations, including people, and developing a clear vision for where you want to lead Nigerians. It shouldn’t be a fire department mentality where you are chasing after programs and policies that are foreign to us, unclear, and maybe misinterpreted.
And because they lack a clear vision, they constantly lead us down a path into destruction and perdition. That’s why I bring up the tax issue—not because I don’t want reforms, but rather because I want one that will benefit us.
