Following the fuel tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in the state’s Gurara Local Government Area on Saturday, the federal government has expressed its sympathies to the government and citizens of Niger State. In a statement on Sunday, Prof. Nantewe Yilwatda, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, called the occurrence terrible, pointing out that it devastated property and claimed many lives.
The ministry’s information officer, Rhoda Iliya, made the announcement in Abuja. The minister cautioned drivers against careless driving that might harm innocent lives, voicing alarm over the nation’s increasing number of tanker explosion instances. Mr. Yilwatda advised them to always follow driving laws to the letter.
“The country’s frequent tanker explosions, which invariably result in fatalities, injuries, and property destruction, sadden me greatly. “I sympathize with the community that lost loved ones in this tragic event,” Mr. Yilwatda stated. He also wished the injured a quick recovery and sent his sympathies to the victims’ families.
The state governor, Umaru Bago, and his staff, especially the Federal Road Safety Corps, Fire Service, and State Emergency Management Agency, were praised by the minister for their prompt action. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Police Force and other concerned Nigerians who helped remove the victims from the area.
86 people were killed in the incident, 80 of whom were buried in a mass grave and the remaining bodies were given to their families to be interred, according to NSEMA Director-General Abdullahi Baba-Arah.
