A pastor was detained by Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo for preaching in a public setting. According to the governor, the act amounted to noise pollution. In a video that has gone viral and is already making the rounds on social media, Soludo challenged a preacher in a marketplace. The governor told the preacher that the behavior was illegal and advised him to stop. He underlined that causing noise pollution to annoy others is not an acceptable way to enjoy one’s fundamental rights.
“Go to your church and preach if you want to,” he added. You cannot come to the open market to preach while disturbing other people. “Those who are interested will come to your church and listen to you if you preach there. You cannot enter a marketplace and begin to annoy everyone. That is not possible. Pollution is the cause.
We uphold religious freedom and other liberties, but you can’t enter an open marketplace where people are trading and start interfering. We must not permit that. The governor threatened detention and a potential N500,000 punishment for noncompliance.
