Assembly Elects Mojisola Meranda As First Female Speaker

LAGOS – Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the La­gos State House of Assembly, was impeached following his ambition to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his al­leged disrespect to the state chief executive, according to sources close to the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos. Recall that while removing the speaker on Monday, the mem­bers of the Assembly hinged their action on six key points on which they said they have lost faith in the leadership of Obasa, a long term speaker of the Lagos Assembly.

Reading out the impeach­ment and the basis for their action, Hon. Obafemi Saheed, who represents Kosofe Con­stituency 2, said their action was because of Obasa’s “gross mismanagement and lack of leadership; his highhandedness and lack of regard for the hon­ourable members at all times; intimidation and suppression of members, including inciting members against one another; misappropriation of funds and lack of transparency in his management of the House of Assembly funds; gross abuse of office as speaker of the House of Assembly and authoritarian­ism, as well as erosion of trust among the members on the speaker.”

The president then particu­larly cited a recent move by the Assembly under Obasa’s leader­ship, to push for a bill enabling them to sack the chairman of the Lagos State Independent Elector­al Commission (LASIEC), label­ing it as “a huge joke.”

They accused Obasa of mak­ing statements likely to disinte­grate and put the party into dis­repute if he continues to speak carelessly about his gubernato­rial ambition in 2027.

Consequently, Tinubu had issued a stern warning to the speaker over his alleged disre­spect towards Sanwo-Olu and the esteemed office of the gov­ernor
