Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria, has stated that he was imprisoned during the military rule of the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, because he was vocal about both domestic and foreign concerns. Obasanjo made these comments when hosting young people under the auspices of the Future Africa Leaders Foundation, according to a statement released on Friday by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi. Obasanjo attributed his arrest to his determination to keep quiet on important subjects and classified it as one of the obstacles he encountered in life. “I was young, active, and dynamic when I joined the army and retired at the age of 42,” he remarked. So I started working in agriculture. I didn’t want to be incarcerated during that time.
It’s difficult to go to prison, but I did so because I wouldn’t keep quiet.
